Hinagdanan Cave in Bohol

The cave is located in the Municipality of Dauis on Panglao Island, in Bohol Province, in the Philippines. It is naturally lighted cavern with a deep lagoon and many large stalactites and stalagmites.

The cave is one of the most visited tourist spot here in Bohol. It’s the most interesting place in Panglao Island, with a beautiful rock formations. Stalactites and stalagmites surround a purest underground lake. Their is a stairs from the entrance, so you can go to the lake even in heels. However, a floor inside is slippery, so there are rope railing along walls. The underground lake is very popular for swimming.

Hinagdanan Cave, Bohol

In the history, it was accidentally discovered in the 16th century when the owner found the hole. He threw a stone into it, and heard a splash. Then he built a ladder to get in to the cave. They named it Hinagdanan in cebuano, which means “laddered”. Hinagdanan Cave is made of limestone with a 100-meter beautiful rock formations. Stalactites and Stalagmites protrude from the ceiling and floor as though trying to meet each other. 

Inside in the cave is a greenish lagoon with a depth of 12-15 feet deep. Fresh water from the cave is connected to the sea through a small hole, making water brackish. Long before, the water was also a source for drinking. The cave’s entrance, which leads to a cavern that is less than a hundred meters long, can only be entered one at a time. The slimy ang smooth friction on the walkway is caused by the caves natural water droplets.

Due to its growing popularity, restaurants and souvenir shops have also opened close to the cave, so tourist and locals alike can enjoy a nice meal before or after their swim.
